Research on photometry and spectroscopy of the RS CVn Binary Systems being conducted by Chiang Mai University in cooperation with Beijing Astronomical Observatory with support from the National Research Council of Thailand and the National Science Foundation of China is now completed. Research findings will be presented at an international conference at a later date.
Joint academic research between Chiang Mai University and Yunnan Observatory, Phase 2, on
“Research on Oscillation of Contact Binaries” is continuing. In 1997, observation was made on a contact binary system “GR Tau” so that studies could be made on the composition and physical properties of the system mentioned. In November-December, 1997, joint observations will be made on newly discovered binary system “V 1061” Tau at Yunnan Observatory. In 1997, the new observatory for the installation of the 24 inch diameter Ritchey-Chretion Telescope in the Sirindhorn Observatory, Chiang Mai University was completed. In the next phase, an Equatorial Mounting Telescope will be installed in this new observatory.
On 15 May, 1997, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn visited the Sirindhorn Observatory at Chiang Mai University to bestow royal blessings on the observatory sign and to observe the Hale-Bopp comet.
